Last year "Let's English You" Summer School Report:
Timisoara, July, 3-14,2006
If one is after a life full of challenges, then organizing a children English Summer School every year does certainly spice up one's life. 2006 was the third year TETA came up with its summer school project entitled LET'S ENGLISH YOU.The location was the same ("Take Ionescu" School for grades I-VIII), the heat was the same, the timetable was mainly the same and the teachers were from the same country (American Peace Corps volunteers). But in all other respects this Third LET'S ENGLISH YOU course was different! Why? First of all, because of the multitude that decided to join the course: 82 children of all ages, from "cute" 8 to "sweet"16. There were 4 groups of students from these different age groups. They came from various schools in Timisoara but nobody hold that against them as they were equally "englished".Secondly, this year's course was meant to be more of an "experience" than just a regular indoor series of "lessons". Besides the games, contests, drawings, debates, story telling and story writing taking place on the school premises, there were a lot of OUTINGS. For instance, on July 4th , in order to celebrate everything America stands for, our students were accompanied to 2 different locations in Timisoara: the American Corner of the Timis County Library and ... a famous fast food restaurant. They discussed with Stephen Mangat history after watching a film in the American Corner and had soft drinks, pies, ice cream and fun with everybody else at the fast food restaurant. For the younger kids the last act of the 4th of July celebration meant watching and discussing with Sokin Won, Richard Kelman or Jacqueline Hazen a cartoon feature about Native Americans. On July 7th we had a trip proper to Buzias where, after a session of games, drama and debates inside the local Theoretical High School we had a great time out in the park. Football, soccer, softball or baseball were the generous offers our American guests made our "englishable" students on that sunny day.On July 11th it was the turn of artistic creativity to rear its handsome head! The students have been gently nudged into the direction of ART 2 Gallery in Timisoara where they attended the opening of Mr. Serban Foarta's exhibition. It was a wonderful opportunity for the children to exercise their artistic potential within an impromptu drawing workshop. And, last but not least, we had the Roses Park outing on July 14th . It was again all about running, laughing, shouting and joking in English because the second team of American Peace Corps volunteers (Amanda Park, Erin Haring, Arnie Swoboda and the familiar, by now, Sokin Won) chose to conduct extensive sessions of baseball, softball or pass-the-egg-but-oops-don't-drop-it games.LET'S ENGLISH YOU course has started to become a "must" on many parents and children list of things to do in Timisoara during the summer holiday. This is a fact due to the wonderful cooperation between The American Peace Corps Romania and the dedicated teachers that make up Timisoara English Teachers' Association Board.
